São Paulo started making sense when I stopped treating it like one downtown
A car-free Sunday on Paulista made the city feel easy, but the real lesson was learning how different the blocks around it could feel once the avenue ended.
My first instinct in São Paulo was to search for the center, as if the city would reveal itself once I found the right main avenue. Avenida Paulista on Sunday almost convinced me that I had. It was broad, active, full of families, music, cyclists, and the kind of visible movement that makes a visitor relax quickly.
The mistake came when I treated that feeling as portable. A few turns away, the rhythm changed, and I realized the city was not hard because it was hostile. It was hard because it shifts block by block. Once I accepted that, I started planning São Paulo in smaller pieces and it got much easier to trust my decisions.
