I stopped seeing the neighborhood as a viewpoint
The visit only started making sense when I had local context, a clear purpose, and someone willing to tell me what not to do.
Before going, I was thinking like a visitor collecting perspectives. I had a route in my head, a few photos I imagined taking, and that vague idea of wanting to understand a part of the city that felt important. What I did not realize was how quickly that mindset can flatten a real neighborhood into a tourist experience.
Everything changed when someone local told me to stop asking what I would see and start asking why I was going. That question slowed me down in the best way. It turned the visit from curiosity without structure into something more respectful, more informative, and honestly much safer.
